ESL 301 Beyond the Reading Unit 4

Analyzing Information - Critical thinking involves thinking carefully about important topics that the writer has not completely explained.

Critical Thinking

In Reading 4 you read that two respected publications, The World Malaria Report (WMR) and The Lancet, the British medical journal, have given very different estimates of the number of deaths worldwide from malaria in 2010. The Lancet estimate is almost twice as high as the WMR estimate.

With a partner, group, or alone, make a list of factors that might explain why the two publications came to different conclusions. Use the questions below to guide you.

  • Where do most of the deaths occur?
  • How easy t is it to get accurate information about malaria deaths?
  • Who are the people who most frequently die from malaria?
  • How are deaths from malaria reported? Who reports them?
  • From whom are these figures important?
Online reading/ research

Choose another infectious disease to read about such as polio, influenza, or tuberculosis. Chose what level of article you want to read, then read the article. Find the answers to the following questions.
  • Where is this disease most prevalent, and what populations are most affected by it?
  • Can it be prevented? Can it be cured?
  • Have there been efforts to eliminate it? How successful have they been?
Writing
Write two paragraphs about your research. The first paragraph will describe the disease, and the second will address prevention and treatment efforts. Use at least two vocabulary words from this unit. Underline the vocabulary words.

Submit your work by 11:59 pm on Friday, October 6th on the D2L Dropbox titled, Beyond the Reading. Use the academic writing tips from the blue handout I gave you at the beginning of the semester.
