The two word I learned are "identity" and "temporary".
ReplyDeleteAlmost the whole first hour I was frustrated, because I barely can understand nothing. Their account is too strong and my English is not enough. But when those madams were started talking, I finally started to get it. As a Chinese, it's interesting for me to hear about Koreans' experience here, their delimmas and confusions somehow fimiliar to me too.
I agree with you! At the beginning ,I cannot listen to these words very clearly. It is too hard for me to listen to words while writing down the word that I hear. However, when I just try my best to listen to speeches and stop writing key words , it does work! So unbelievable !
DeleteI have got a lot of information about Korea ! It is a fantastic experience!
I had a hard time understanding what the men said. I think I should practice more. In addition, the panel discussion brings me some new ideas of their language and growth.

DeleteI can't understand what they said either. I think it's necessary for me to improve my listening skills and i will choose more ESL classes next semester.
DeleteGood to hear if you learned a new words.
DeleteI provide my:
- in steady
- compose
- truly
This is Eric.
DeleteI really agree of you. Because I can not understand most of time.
We need to study hard.
Lily, I clearly remember that you sat next to me that night!
DeleteTo be honest, I can't agree more about what you said. There is no doubt that our English listening skills need to improve a lot. However, I think maybe their English has a Korean accent, which was even made it harder for us to understand.
Anyway, this Panel Discussion was very meaningful! We don't need to worry too much about different culture. We can learn from the previous and ourselves!
Exactly Jiaxin Qian, their accent was "weird". I think it's what made the understanding hard to all of us. I don't think that it's our fault. We have been learning English for less than three months, and they're in this country since years...I think there no way to compare our language skill there. we're are doing a great job tying to improve our English skills each day.
DeleteIt is a wonderful panel discussion! Although I cannot write down all of words ,I have learned some new words, like identity, comfort women(terrible history),mentor. Additionally, speakers list some Korean words (but I cannot write down it,pity!)
ReplyDeleteDuring tha panel discussion , I always think about one question: whether language development influenses logical thinking or logical thinking changes language development?
Every culture has its own language and thinking way! However when we face this multiple and changing culture , one thing that we will never change is who I am. I will remember there is a speaker saying like this "I am who I am!"
I am also impressed by "I am who I am ", too. This simple sentence could let me think a lot. I also agree that culture and language are sometimes really builds people's character.
DeleteI totally agree that "every culture has its own language and thinking way". Language is a production of history of a country, it can represent customs, regions and so on. Only when we use language can we share our ideas with others.
DeleteI think language development influences logical thinking. Additionally, logical thinking changes language development as well. When I study English in the UWRF, my logical thinking become more direct. Moreover, sometimes my logical thinking also influences my English study. For example, when I am thinking, I prefer to use and to connect ideas. Therefore, I always use and while I am speaking English.
DeleteFrom my viewpoints, the development of thinking and language is a complementary process. It occurs to me that thinking models are different between English and Chinese. For example, English expression is more direct. On the contrary, Chinese expression is relatively indtrect.
DeleteI learned three new words in the meeting. The first is impeachment which means to charge an important public figure with a serious crime. The second is identity which means who or what somebody is. The last one is mantra which is a metaphor to Korean education.
ReplyDeleteThe most impressive thing I remembered is the story of a speaker’s professor who acts differently speaking different languages. Her professor left her homeland when she was five. After living so many years in America, she found out that she could speak her homeland language immediately when she came back. However it doesn't happen to the speaker when she is learning Korean. Language and memories are unsolved mysterious, aren't they?
Danchen, thank you for your considerate explanations of the new words you learned. As for the experience that the speaker's professor could speak her mother tongue immediately after living in America for many years, I think it is because when her professor was five, there might be a mother tongue memory in her brain. Once she returned to her motherland and was in such a familiar environment, she could communicate with native speakers more easily. Of course, individual differences also exist so it is normal that such a circumstance does not happen to the speaker.
DeleteDanchen I really agree with you.You listened carefully and I should learn from you.Actually the first language is just something in our blood.Especially when you are in a foreign country this feeling is stronger.
DeleteDanchen, I can't agree more. The first language has a strong impact on a person than other language. I remembered that a few days before I tried my best to let myself speak English, but when I met a emergency I immediately spoke Chinese.

ReplyDeleteI learned some vocabularies and phrases from the panel discussion, like immigrant, Identity, power of language.
ReplyDeleteWhat impressed me most is that one of the madams talked about her interesting experience of learning Korean in good humor. When she wanted to learn Korean, she had a really hard time learning it also she had a Korean face. And she also answer the question from a student whose parents are both immigrants.
I really agree with you. I remember that humorous madam and it is very interesting to listen others' life.
DeleteSincerely, I feel sorry for those who are well prepared for their interesting stories, but I can not control my tiredness and sleepiness. Therefore, I may fail to catch most of the words they said. In other words, there were a great number of new words for me during the Discussion but I missed them. The first word I looked up in the dictionary was "accumulate", whose pronunciation sounded familiar to me but I forgot its meaning. The second new word I heard might be "kimchi". I just thought that word might be a kind of Korean food so I tried translating "泡菜", a Chinese word, into Korean, listening to the pronunciation, and I was right. My impression of the event are all about Chinese characters and the fantastic drum performance. I learned that Chinese characters were used in ancient Korea so there are full of them in Korean ancient things. It is difficult to learn so many Chinese characters for Chinese, let alone Korean, but that is cool to learn a new language!
ReplyDeleteI am attracted by your post because I saw Chinese words. And I am happy to learn the word “ kimchi ” as for a foodie. And it is so pity that you as well as I were sleepy because it was so difficult to understand the whole speech. But I believe that we will improve a lot after this semester.
DeleteI have learned drummer, alphabet and panel from this event.
ReplyDeleteThe performance by the traditional Korean drummers is fascinating. They make eye contact all the time during the performance. It contributes to their nice cooperation and wonderful performance. What's more? I have learned some knowledge regarding alphabet of South Korea and China, women status in traditional South Korea society. I also observed that many ESL tutors came to this panel discussion. I have learned from them that good teachers are those who know a lot about their students.
From your comments, I can see the basic perspective and quality of a prospective teacher. Thank you for your speech and hope your future more exciting!
DeleteI agree with you. The performance by the South Korea's drummers was infectious. That impressed me a lot.
DeleteI learned some new words the event yesterday, such as Vietnam War, praxis, columnist, drummer, etc.
ReplyDeleteI learned three things from the event: one is South Korea had not their own writing characters until fifteenth Century; the two is South Korea was a Japanese colony during the 1895-1945; three is Self-identity Derives from freedom, and freedom is the only way we can express our views and be independent.
Yesterday I went to this English language transition program. It is so wonderful in my opinion. Though it is kind of difficult to understand all of these, it is a chance to improve my listening skills to some degree. And I learned two words. The first one is “identity”, which appeared many times. I knew this word in the past, but I had a new definition yesterday. The other one is “marginalize”. It means ignore. And not only did I learn vocabulary but also I learned some historical events, like Vietnam War. What impressed me most is the drummer. So excellent! I enjoyed it deeply!
ReplyDeletePanel Discussion showed us how South Korea people lived in their country. Visitors talked about the beginning of America as well. These were the stories of five people, citizens of South Korea. I was interested this different stories. In Additionaly, I could hear Korean drummers.
ReplyDeleteThis is Eric.
ReplyDeleteThe word I learn is :specialized, adapt, scholar.
In this event heard a lot of people share the experience. One of them heard about immigration, though many people want to immigrant to the United States.
But the difficulties encountered more than you think.
And my English is not so good, can not understand much, especially a man who speak very long, almost did not understand.
I agree with you. I need to more study. We can do better. Good luck

ReplyDeleteHi,everone! I'm Melody.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I didn't understand every single word they said, I learned something from Korean culuture and some of panel's unique experience. I had a really good time that night!
When it comes to the new words that I've learned during the Panel Discussion, I would like to share these four new words: identity(n. It's somebody's name or who they are); occupy(v. Fill time or space); engage(v. participate in); issue(n./vt. Subject or problem./To officially make a statement.).
As for my feelings, I described that in a general way at the beginning of my comment. Additionally, I'd like to say some details about what I learned. No matter where, everyone has the freedom to express their thoughts and gratitudes! Futhermore, everyone has the identity , I'm just who I am! All of us is unique in this world, no one is perfect! We can also learn a lot from our own experiences!
I learned "drummer ,identity"on Monday at the meeting. At first I didn't understand what the first man talked about because my English is not so good and I have to practice more. But when it was the madam's turn, I understood some. She shared her own exprience with us. Language is really a fantastic thing. We learn our own first language also the second language. We learn not only the language itself but also the culture in language.
ReplyDeleteYes, learning another language is fantastic! We sited in America and learned some culture about Korea by English! I was really grateful I was here.
DeleteI learned some new words from this event, such as identity, praxis, drummer and so on.
ReplyDeleteDuring the panel discussion, I was impressed by the sentence “I am who I am”. Writing characters played a significant role in the identity of a country. Only within a particular culture could people raise respect and honor to themselves. Additionally, freedom could be expressed not only in verbal words, but also through one’s actions. Language represented a culture and it can show identity of a country.
I cannot agree more. I was also impressed by this simple sentence. The power of words is amazing. Every country has its own language and culture. There might be some changes in culture while language developing. All in all, we are supposed to show our respect to every culture.
DeleteYes! It is clear that presenters (typically females) had a lot to say about their experiences in here as from another country, the situation they have been through. They were kind of marginalized, and frustrated. However, we can not ignore the fact that it is not only an american problem: I think it's global. It's naturally common to humans to reject others basing on individual facts. I'm sure that in Asia people from some countries are rejected too due to some facts too.
DeleteI learned “identity”“character” from this event. The performance impressed me a lot. It was infectious. In addition, through this speech, I understood more about South Korea's language, culture and identity. Including the history about South Korea's writing characters. To be honest, at first, I could not listen clearly.Sometimes, I could only grab some keywords. From my perspective, I should practice more. It was really an impressive experience.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, the speech was too difficulty for me to catch the points. I only could follow some information about the speech. As for the new words that I learned were identity and drummer. Identity is who you are. The identity of a person or place is the characteristics that distinguish them from others. Additionally, I know the word drummer before. However, it was my first time to watch the traditional Korean drum performance, and it gave the world a new meaning.
ReplyDeleteMy impression of the event was that one of the lecturers' serious expressions. Although some of the audiences showed tired faces, he still showed his ideas carefully and earnestly.
It was an interesting night for me! I really enjoyed the drumming performances. But the speeches almost drove me crazy! I couldn hardly understand them ...
ReplyDeleteI learned some new words. Two of them were panel and kimchi. Panel means discussion and kimchi is a kind of food from Korea.
What impressed me most was one lady's opinion to "beautiful". Confidence led to beauty. And I agreed with her. The three ladies at the stage were confident that night, which made them more beautiful.
I agree with you! A bunch of strange words drove me crazy!
Deletehahaha I think when I can't understand them but I know I should try my best to understand. It's really a hard work.
DeleteHello I am Carrie,
ReplyDeleteWhat a pity, I missed the Traditional Korean drummers. However, I am so appreciate that I could learn a lot by reading blogs. From my viewpoints, It is a creative way to study so I can use what I have learned in my future class.
This panel discussion involved many aspects such as language, history and culture. It led me thinking deeply. The development of thinking and language is a complementary process. Therefore, learning language is equal to learning culture. In addition, the sentence of I am who I am impressed me most occurring to me that we can not forget ourselves wherever we are. Because of the limitation of language, I didn’t recognize every sentences during the panel discussion, but I tried my best to learn about South Korean. After listening the history of South Korea, I believe that a country should have a comprehensive ability. Only in this way, it can be worthy of respected.
I learned "immigrant " "identity" in the meeting.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the traditional Korean drumming performance so much. The performers were working well together, and the performance was very attractive.
Unfortunately, the speech was too hard for me to understand. What impressed me most was that the Korea Professor adopted by an American couple. She shared the experience of her growing up, and the confusions she faced. It must be a hard time, but fortunately she responded magnificently to the challenge.
Last Monday, I attended the Language Matters / Year of Korea Discussion. At first, I was deeply moved by the performance of Traditional Korean drummers. They played the wonderful music with just two simple instruments. As for the discussion, to be honest, I can only understand some parts of it. Fortunately, I learned two new words: identity and compose. I should practice English more so that I will gain more next time. :)

ReplyDeleteThe new word I've learned is that "identity" and "specialized".
ReplyDeleteI think I've learn something about speaker's life, but because of the accent, it's hard to understand them... I think the old man talk in a low vioce and I can't hear claerly. But at the beginning the drums really surprised me because it's really wonderful! I really enjoyed the time.
I learned ching and demeaner.
ReplyDeleteI listened Korean traditional drum playing, I listened this so long time ago, that make me feel good.
And I thought I need to study English more hard.
To be honest I was bored at the beginning of the event due to the fact that I could not really hear what presenters were saying. It was more interesting when the first lady start talking. I immediately noticed the difference between presenters. The ones adopted since they were kids, were more fluent. However, I learned the words *IMPEACHMENT, DRUMMER, *PRAXIS. I don't even know how it's spelled. I will look up in the dictionary later. The artistic performance was great though! :)
