  1. 1. I think what he did was definitely wrong because he copied others’ work without permission. It is definitely plagiarism.
    2. It was a new word for me, but I understand its meaning in Chinese. However, I just know it and in China we don’t attach great importance to it.
    3. In China, we would like to say that plagiarism is prohibited. However, students are always copying and pasting others’ sentences. The punishments for plagiarism will be redoing that assignment although we were never caught because of plagiarism. Therefore, it is very common to see plagiarism in China.
    4. To tell the truth, plagiarism is not paid much attention and it is ok for students to copy. As for our homework, if we don’t have enough time or homework is too difficult for us, we will copy others’ work by searching in the internet. Even worse, teachers are supported. For example, our teacher told us to remember every words of one beautiful essay in order to use it in college entrance examination.
    5. I think the reason must be laziness. The homework is too difficult or too much, students want to take shortcuts since they want to finish their homework so as to play. Of course, I did it when I was in high school. At that time, I thought it was so troublesome for me to write an essay in Chinese writing practice. Thus, I just copied others’ essay. Fortunately, teacher didn’t know.
    6. I think university can give a speech about plagiarism, such as negative impact and punishment. Also, professors should emphasize that no one can plagiarism. Only in this way can students understand how serious it is. After that, we will not dare to do plagiarism.

    1. I also think universities in China don't pay much attention to plagiarism. That's what Chinese schools should improve.

    2. Laziness can cause plagiarism because plagiarism is a easy way to finish tasks. I agree with you. Do you have any good tips to help people prevent plagiarism?

      Delete
    3. I agree with you. When students know the impact and punishment of plagiarism, then they may do not dare to do plagiarism. It is also helpful to give a speech to teach students how to cite.

    4. Yes, I agree with you. Therefore I think China's education system should give a priority to academic honesty.

  2. 1. Amro was wrong because he copied a paragraph without citation.
    2. Before coming to the U.S., I thought plagiarism is an action that stealing other’s work or knowledge.
    3. I think the punishments for plagiarism is appropriate. Students will have a chance to fix their mistake without reporting them for plagiarism. Afterwards, if they still don’t change their paper, colleges will give them a failing grade on the assignment they're caught cheating on. Further offenses can result in failing a class, suspension or being kicked out of the university.
    4. I’m not clear with plagiarism because I haven’t study about it in China. But I think there will also be some punishment for students but not so severe.
    5. Comparing to China, American universities have many assignments, many International students have a hard time understanding the content of classes and doing their homework in the second language. I have experienced the pressure. We all want to have a good performance and also don’t want let our professors and parents down. If we really can’t finish our projects on time, I think that kind of cases might happen.
    6. From my perspective, universities should have some classes about plagiarism for international students, teaching students the difination of plagiarism, what’s the punishment of the plagiarism and teaching us how to write citation.

    1. I agree with you. I sometimes feel stressed out, because using the second language to do everything can be a real challenge. I will be afraid that I cannot do well enough. However, plagiarism can lead to unexpected dangers, so I refuse to do it.

      Delete
    2. What you said is right! I think the reason for plagiarism is likely to be pressure. There is no doubt that everyone want to get grate grades. However, I think they should understand that what matters is not their grades but their progress. With this thought, maybe plagiarism will disappear.

      Delete
    3. I am Jimmy (Min Jia). I totally agree with you that many International students feel hard to understand the content of classes in the second language. Sometimes, they feel difficult to express their ideas with limited vocabulary. Additionally, I think it is an excellent that universities have some classes about plagiarism for students. However, I think the classes are also important to native students.

    4. I can't agree more. Every student wants to get good grades but we should use appropriate way. We can not take a risk of being punished by plagiarism. During the process of studing, we should step by step to rammed our foundation, should we?

  3. 1. I think Amro did wrong. He can't just copied a paragraph. This is plagiarism.
2.No, before I came here, I never heard this word.
3.I think it is a little bit too strict. I agree with the thought that we should respect copy right, students, however, is a different from people in society. They still learning and sometimes it is too harsh for them loose their degree and years of hard-working for an accident. Furthermore, dismiss is not a good way of educating, it just a simple way to give up.
    4. It is not acceptable, but the way we define it might be different. Students in China won't have to cite everything in your paper, and can have a sentence or a little part of copy. However, if your article has over 30% of coping, you will have your severe punishment.
    5. Maybe it is late and you haven't finish your paper which due to tomorrow. Maybe you have a similar idea with a article and you just like the way the author elaborate it. Sometimes I have a favorite paragraph, but I can just use it as a quote.
    6. Just refer it in class, and always reinforce it. I think if people know about the problem, they will behave themselves.

    1. You are right. We don't know much or pay attention about plagiarism in China. Schools and universities should help students to understant the importance about not doing plagiarism.

    2. Just like you said, "if your artical has over 30% portion were copyed, you will get a punishment." But that do not mean tyou can cite others' words without citation or reference. I think it means you can cite under 30% portion using others's work with proper citation and reference.

      Delete
    3. I can't agree with you any more. Students in the learning process will inevitably make mistakes, so the professor should give them some guidance to prevent them from making the same mistake again, which is the purpose of education.

      Delete
    4. I argree with you. As you write, Maybe it is late and you haven't finish your paper which due to tomorrow. They have to copy some sentences in order to have a good performance of each work.

      Delete
    5. Your answer to question 4 is great! In China, we don't need to cite every resource, and it's not a problem if we refer to some of other's ideas. The system of prohibiting plagiarism is more serious in America.

      Delete
    6. Yes, for students who never know plagiarism before, serve punishments like dismissing are not appropriate. It had better to educate these students and tell them the importance of academic honesty.

      Delete
  4. 1. I think what Amro did was wrong because copying a paragraph from a student paper verbatim into his own work is a kind of plagiarism. If he want to use the paragraph from other people's papers into his own work, he is required to add a reference or citation.
    2. I did't know plagiarism this word before coming to the U.S., but I knew its meaning in Chinese because our teachers in China always emphasized the importance of academic honesty as well.
    3. I think the punishments for plagiarism depend on different situations. For some international students, they may not get used to English learning environment, and plagiarize by accident. We should give them another opportunity to correct the mistake, not just zero score. Every professor need to tell their students anything about plagiarism so that they will take this issue very seriously.
    4. In China, if someone is found to cheat in exam, he/she will get zero score and have a word with teachers. However, copying something online is not regarded as a serious option. Most teachers in China may not search their students' paper online to check whether they copied others or not because there will be a big work for teachers.
    5. I think the reasons are having little time to do and having few ideas to do. I experienced this kind of pressure, and it drove me crazy. Sometimes in China, even if you keep doing homework all day, there is still lots of work left. Therefore, students have to take a shortcut to save time. Also, some assignments are truly hard to complete for some students, and to copy others' work can solve their problem exactly.
    6. I think college students all understand the importance of academic honesty, and they will plagiarize just because of laziness and the lucky psychology. Therefore, I think professors just tell their students the consequences of plagiarism at the beginning of the class, and give those who plagiarized certain punishments based on the penalty standard.

    1. I agree with you on the reasons contributing to the plagiarism. Too much homework may make students feel strssed out so that leads to plagiarism.

    2. I agree. Sometimes too much homework will make people lose inspiration and the enthusiasm. However, it cannot be the reasons to plagiarize.

      Delete
    3. I totally agree with you. Like what you said, teachers also think it is too troublesome for them to check on line if the students copy. Therefore, students always think teachers would not know. Thus, it will be more common to see plagiarism.

    4. I'm Cindy.

About your answer about question #4, I would like to say "Exactly."
Maybe because professors do not care much about plagiarism, students don't show their respectfulness to the origin authors. I think both teachers and students should think highly of plagiarism and take the best to avoid it.

  5. 1.Amro is wrong. He found the paragraph from the internet and did not say where the source comes from.
2.I knew it before I came to America. I thought it was the wrong behavior that copy other people's ideas. However, I have never thought the consequences of plagiarism can be very serious.
    3. I think it is appropriate. If students do not want to plagiarize deliberately, they are supposed to learn the citations to avoid plagiarism, and it is also a way to express the respect to the author. What is more, the strict punishments can rise people's awareness of protecting copyright.
4.In China, plagiarism is not always regarded as a very serious behavior. Most professors will not warn the person who copy a small paragraph. If it is an important assignment or essay, the professor will punish the person. However, the punishments are not really serious.
5.Some students do not arrange their time properly. They think they can start their researches tomorrow, and then they will find different excuses to be lazy with work. Thus, the last days they are always working under the pressure to meet deadline. I experienced the pressure several times in the past years, but I did not plagiarize. I think I should arrange my time well.
6.Professors can explain the plagiarism and the punishments in detail. What is more, a university can sometimes hold lectures to rise students' awareness.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yse, definitely. The another reason we should not plagiarize is that we could not learn from it by just copying others words. And you pointed out the fact that Chinese universities have lots of problems about plagiarism.

      Delete
    2. I agree that holding lectures is a good way to rise students' awareness. And I guess it will be better if we can have such lectures to younger students as younger students could have better memories about what we can not do or what we can do.

      Delete
    3. But I think lectures do not attract students to listen, they maybe skip lectures. How about professors emphasis every class about 2 min.?

      Delete
    4. yeah, I think plagiarism is not that serious in China. Maybe a little bit too lenient. There are some news that expose someone get a Master or Ph.d degree by cheating. That's unfair.

  6. Danchen Huang:
    1. Zizo Amro didn’t have much time to finish his paper before deadline. Additionally, he found and copied others work online.
    2. I just know it is wrong to copy others work, however, I don’t know it is obey the American laws.
    3. I believe it is appropriate. We should show respect to the writer and the author.
    4. It is not right thing to do in my country. However it is okay if the teacher doesn’t find that. And in China, teachers are too busy to check if it is plagiarism sometimes.
    5. Sometimes students would think the work is not worth doing so they wouldn’t like to spend much time on it. As for me, I sometimes would run out of time just like Amro.
    6. I think in America, university has already helped us international students a lot. But in China, university should pay more attention on it. Maybe we should have similar classes about plagiarism.

  7. 1.Yes, because he copied a paragraph without citation. By the way, he was supposed to finished his paper on time rather than leaving it to half an hour before deadline.
2.It was a new English word in one of reading articles but I didn’t remember. We talk about plagiarism more in Chinese. In my elementary school, Chinese teacher began to tell us to cite the name of the author when we used their words in our essay, or it would be a kind of plagiarism.
3.I think they are appropriate, severe punishments can prevent students from plagiarism effectively.
4.Plagiarism is not an advocated behavior especially in scholarly articles or studies. If you want to get good grades, plagiarism is the thing you can never do. Professors won’t let a plagiarism student pass their courses. However, it is still very common among students who don’t pay attention to studies.
5.No enough time for a student to finish his homework or just lack of ability. I often experienced such pressures in my high school as the homework was too much and too difficult.
    6.Different punishments to plagiarism.

    1. Learning from UWRF has made us realize the seriousness of plagiarism, and let us learn how to correctly quote others' viewpoints. By reading more documents, we can get more inspiration to enrich our articles.

    3. I was surprised that your elementary teacher taught kind of citation. I only heard about severe plagiarism news on TV. For Q6 I think professors also need teach how and when to cite.

  8. 1. Amro worried the paper looked thin, he went online, found a student paper on the same story and copied a paragraph verbatim into his own work without source. This was plagiarism.
    2. I know some information about plagiarism, but it's not about the use of it in school, and more of it is in the use of professional reports. I was shocked by the strict use of the school paper.
    3. The punishment for plagiarism is very strict, but it is very effective, and it can protect other authors' intellectual property rights, also enable students to recognize the seriousness of plagiarism.
    4. In my country's educational system, plagiarism is not allowed, but it often does not cause such serious consequences. Once found, the plagiarized students will be punished, but a large portion of the plagiarism will not be found to be used in the student's homework.
    5. The pressure of learning can cause some students to copy other articles so that they can hand in their homework on time. Or more persuasive to make his own articles more convincing. I feel stressful and oppressive when I experience stress. Reading other people's articles can also bring you more inspiration. But it is the right way to quote other people's research correctly in your own article.
    6. Universities should guide students to complete the report step by step, especially to help international students realize the seriousness of plagiarism and regulate the behavior of students with a strict system.

    2. I knew plagiarism just a little before I came to US. I don't know how to write sources and to what extent called plagiarism.
    3. The plagiarism is very strict but can prevent this behavior effectively. Students will consider if they copied others and then give up.
    4. Plagiarism is not allowed but except for Graduation thesis professors will not look for it. If some students plagiarism in their daily homework, professors will not know.
    5. I think the most important reason to plagiarism is that students want to do best and not let them down. Also they maybe don't have time to do homework and it will due today. I feel really stressful because I sometimes maybe forget to cite so I will check it after essays are down.
    6. University should ask their professors to tell about the Serious consequences if students copy others' work at the beginning of semester. In addition, university should also teach students how to write references properly.

  10. 1.Amro did wrong. Because Amro copied somebody’s story without his permission.
2.Before coming to the U.S., I knew the plagiarism in Chinese, but I did not know this word in English, because I did not learn about this word.
3.From my perspective, the punishments for plagiarism is necessary. I think they seem appropriate, because if somebody plagiarize, he or she infringes upon the rights of others, and brings trouble to others. However, we should provide related knowledge about plagiarize to international students and other students who do not know plagiarize accurately. Because different countries have different cultures and punishments.
    4. Plagiarism is also not allowed in our country’s education system. However, as far as I am concerned, the punishments about plagiarism is not very serious. Whether or not plagiarizing an article will be judged according to the similarity of the article.
    5. 1.Maybe because lack of time. 2. Maybe because they not very good at English. Because they are international students. 3. Maybe because they are lazy.
    6. I think a university can provide a class about plagiarism. Let students easily understand it.

    1. Exactly! I think Americans attach more importance to the intellectual-property protection. Our ZISU professors didn't teach us how to cite source and some other academic standards though plagiarism is also wrong in our education system. The most important reason for students to plagiarism must be students are too lazy, others, such as no time or not capable, are excuses, I think.

  11. 1. Do you feel what Amro did was wrong? Explain.
YES. He went online and copy other's words into his own work, which is considered as plagiarism.
    2. Was plagiarism a word you knew before coming to the U.S.? Explain.
Yes. I was just told by teachers not to copy other's ideas or words when I was in China. Only did I come to USA, I got to know this new word and idea and gained a deeper understanding about American academic standards.
    3. What do you think about the punishments for plagiarism? Do they seem appropriate? Explain.
I think that is fair enough. Plagiarism is definitely wrong. Citing sources correctly is showing the respect to original author and academic, on the other hand, it is also a form of being honest to yourself. Rule is rule. If we cross the line, we should get punished.
    4. How is plagiarism regarded in your country's education system? Explain.
It is also regarded as a severely bad behavior in China's education system. But in China, we are not supposed to cite totally correctly and most of Chinese(ZISU) students are never taught how to cite correctly..
    5. What reasons might compel a student to plagiarize? Have you experienced the pressures? Explain.
They want to get better grades./ They don't want to disappoint their professors./They are too lazy to think independently./ The essays are too difficult to them./ They don't know how to cite sources correctly.
No. "Be Real." is my swag lol

  12. 1. Yes. He explained that he only copied one small paragragh to make his article better. I think whatever you copied one small paragragh or whole passage, you have make a serious mistake-plagiarism.
    2. Yes, I know this word before I come to the U.S. and my teachers told me if you did not know answer, it was acceptable. If you did not know this answer and you copied other people's answers , then you pretended as if you had known. It was unacceptable. Besides, in China, there are some strict rules for plagiarism and my teachers always say never broke these rules.
    3. For punishment, it seems appropriate and effenctive. Because these strict regulations, people will obey these rules. I suppose this punishment creates a professional and fair atmosphere to every scholar to accomplish their goals.
    4. In Chinese education system, plagiarism is strictly restricted. When you look at some unversities in China, you will find some similarities both in China and America. In universities, scholars pursue a higher level in their fields and they do not want to make anything fake. Therefore, there are some rules to prevent to plagiarise.
    5. There are lots of reason "triggering" plagiarism. First of all, most people plagiarise because they want to make their own articles better. They want to make their essays more professional. Then, some people do not make a plan so that they cannot manage their time very well. When the due date is closing, they are more and more anxious and they copy other people's ideas. Thirdly, some people ignore the seriousness of plagiarism and they think plagiarism does not matter.
As for my experiences, I also feel pressure because plagiarism like "a red and fresh apple" to me. In other words, copying others is a very easy way to get answer while persuading yourself is not easy. However, I always tell myself“ It belongs to other people not you.”
    6. Unversities can organize some activities, like speech contests, debate competitions etc to make students understand what is plagiarism and how to prevent plagiarism. Besides, universities also should strengthen connection with students and help them solve problems and pressure.

Amro did wrong. He copied one paragraph from the internet without citation. That was plagiarism.
    2. Was plagiarism a word you knew before coming to the U.S.? Explain.
Yes. My professors in China already talked about plagiarism before. They told us that plagiarizing was really a terrible idea and they also mentioned that America was very strict about plagiarism.
    3. What do you think about the punishments for plagiarism? Do they seem appropriate? Explain.
I think punishments are necessary and appropriate. Because people who plagiarize are not respectful for the origin authors' hard work. They owe the punishment. Besides, punishment is also a effective way to warn those who want plagiarize.
    4. How is plagiarism regarded in your country's education system? Explain.
Plagiarism is a more and more serious thing in Chinese education system. In ZISU, my professors warned us several times not to plagiarize. I also saw many opinions on the internet hit plagiarism.
    5. What reasons might compel a student to plagiarize? Have you experienced the pressures? Explain.
Deadline is close and there's no time left. The student is lazy and doesn't want to finish his or her task. Maybe he forget to citation. I have once experienced the pressures because I didn't do well with paraphrasing others' words.

    1. I think what Amro did was wrong. The reason for that is he used another person’s ideals without proper citations, which is unfair to the author.
    2. I knew plagiarism in China. When I need to write an essay as homework, my professors always tell me do not use other people’s opinions without proper citations. If I plagiarize, it will influence my grades.
    3. The article wrote that when students plagiarize, they will get a failing grade, fail a class, or be kicked out of the university. In my opinion, they are appropriate. The reason is that strict punishments contribute to pushing students to be honest. However, I think schools can provide lectures on proper citations. Therefore, students who are not familiar with citations’ standards can avoid plagiarizing.
    4. In fact, plagiarism is very serious in China, especially in academic paper. In academic paper, there is a limited number of citations that people can use in their paper. People cannot use too many citations. If professors find students plagiarize, professors will give the students a failing grade.
    5. There are some reasons accounting to plagiarism, Firstly, some students are not familiar with the citations’ standards. Secondly, some students do not know where to look for help. Thirdly, some students do not want to disappoint their professors. I have experienced the pressures. When I need write an essay in English, I feel hard to express my opinions because of limited vocabulary.
    6. I think universities can have some lectures on citations. Additionally, universities should provide students the resources of citations, such as books and websites. What is more, universities should provide students more opportunities to practice citing.

To be honest, it was a new word for me after arriving in the U.S. However, our professors in China told us we cannot copy an essay or paragraph directly from Internet or other sources, which would lead to a very severe problem. The same as here, our professors also mentioned the significance of plagiarism.
    3. What do you think about the punishments for plagiarism? Do they seem appropriate? Explain.
According to this website, I knew that "Punishments for cheating can be severe. Most colleges give students a failing grade on any assignment they're caught cheating on. Further offenses can result in failing a class, suspension or being kicked out of the university" (Kia Farhang). From my perspective, these punishments for plagiarism are appropriate. Because if we copy someone else's' work, it's unfair to the true author and we will not learn anything. What is more, we may lose important references for future jobs. Therefore, in order to avoid plagiarism, I think these punishments are feasible.
    4. How is plagiarism regarded in your country's education system? Explain.
In my opinion, plagiarism also regarded as a very serious problem in academic field in China. I remember if you want to write an excellent graduation thesis, the length of sources cannot be more than ten percent of the whole paper. On the other hand, if you are suspected of plagiarism, you absolutely can't gain a good grade in that subject and if it is serious enough, you even may not graduate.
    5. What reasons might compel a student to plagiarize? Have you experienced the pressures? Explain.
Following are some reasons that might compel a student to plagiarize: 1. Do not have enough time to finish the assignment on time. 2. Have no idea about how to write, in other words, do not understand professor's requirements. 3. Do not know how to cite the sources in a proper way. 4. Do not how to say that in English (for some international students).
Personally speaking, at first, I found it was so hard and I do not know how to cite my sources correctly. I still remember the first essay I wrote in Research Writing Class, it took me about four hours to figure out how to deal with my citations. Fortunately, I made it and learned a lot.
    6. What more can a university do to help students understand the expectations of plagiarism?
From the very beginning at the semester, the university could provide international students with a presentation about how severe results would happen if you plagiarized and offer some suggestions to avoid plagiarism. In addition, it could not be better if the university could set up a tutor center especially for international students to help them with improving writing skills.

    1. I agree with you. From the beginning at the semester, the university could provide international students with a presentation or a class about plagiarism. Because different countries have different rules and punishments about plagiarism. In this way, the university can help international students understand plagiarism easily.

    2. This is Felicia. I have the same experience as you when I was writing my first assignment at the beginning of the semester. It was really hard for me to figure out how to cite the sources in APA style correctly. Anyway, practice makes perfect, we have learned a lot about academic honesty and we are doing better jobs than before.

    3. What if at the beginning of semesters, international students' poor listening skills hold them back? I wouldn't say that is a good time.

  16. 1. Yes, he was totally wrong. Even though he was not finished the homework a few minutes before the deadline, he could not copy a paragraph of other students verbatim into his own homework. Because it was regarded as plagiarism.

    2. To be honest, “plagiarism” is a new word for me. However, after translating into Chinese I can understand what it means.

    3. From my point view, I think we should take plagiarism seriously. There are two reasons analyzed from two angles. Firstly, authors work very hard on creating so we should respect their work and give them credit. Secondly, as for students, we learn nothing from copying. Besides, if you copy or plagiarize, you will lose important references for the future.

    4. This question was worthy of thinking. In my country, we do not have a lesson especially about plagiarism in our school. But cheating on the exam and copying homework will regard as serious issues. Additionally, when we attend some high-level competitions, the sponsor will write clearly about serious consequences of plagiarism.

    5. There some reasons compel students to plagiarize. The most important reason is that the deadline is around the corner. Therefore, students will under pressure and can’t believe themselves will complete their homework in time. What’s more, they lack academical knowledge of citation. Besides, students are not aware of the seriousness of plagiarism so they may copy others’ work with unawareness.

    6. A university should take responsibility for giving students instructions such as definite plagiarism, cite the work properly and tell students punishments of plagiarism.

    1. Everyone's idea is different, the degree of plagirism is also different. But have you thought the punishment of plagirism is too strict? Indeed, we should take plagiarism seriously, but we should find another way to be an appropriate punishment.

  17. 1. Yes. I think he did wrong because he copied a paragraph verbatim into his own work. Obviously this is an act of plagiarism.

    2. I never heard this word before but I know it is similar to copying someone’s intellectual achievements.

    3. The punishments for plagiarism are appropriate. From my perspective, every student should have a right to be forgiven. For the first time to plagiarize, the professor should give him a chance and educate at the same. May let him rewrite the assignment. But if the student is found to be plagiarizing the second time, he should get zero points and be given a severe punishment.

    4. In my country, people don't pay much attention to plagiarism. The penalties for plagiarism are not severe; students who plagiarized will only be required to rewrite their assignments or some professors choose to ignore that and just give the student a low grade.

    5. The reason may be that there is not enough time or no ideas. I've been under this kind of pressure and it really upset me. A large number of tasks not only made me feel helpless, but also disturbed my train of thought.

    6. As a matter of fact, most people know that plagiarism is a bad behavior, so as a college, in the emphasis on banning plagiarism should also be appropriate to reduce tasks at the same time, give students more time to complete the task.

    1. Yes, there is old saying goes, "He's innocent because he knows nothing". We may forgive people when they do not know. Also when we have hard work to do, just start it early.

  18. 1. Do you feel what Amro did was wrong? Explain.
I think Amro was wrong. Because he copied a paragraph verbatim into his own work without citation, which is a kind of plagiarism.
    2. Was plagiarism a word you knew before coming to the U.S.? Explain.
No, I don’t know this word before coming to the U.S. I only knew the Chinese word which has the same meaning. The first time I heard about plagiarism was in the first day of this semester.
    3. What do you think about the punishments for plagiarism? Do they seem appropriate? Explain.
I think the punishments for plagiarism are severe but reasonable. Plagiarism is a bad phenomenon and needs strict rules to forbid it. The severe punishments can prevent students from plagiarizing.
    4. How is plagiarism regarded in your country's education system? Explain.
In my opinion, Chinese people are gradually becoming aware of plagiarism. Last year, in Zisu, some professors told us what punishment we may get if found plagiarized in the paper we hand in at the beginning of the semester.
    5. What reasons might compel a student to plagiarize? Have you experienced the pressures? Explain.
1.Don’t have enough time to finish the paper. 2.The work is too difficult for them. 3.They want to make their paper better and get high scores.
Yes. Sometimes when I have difficulty with my paper, I want to search on the internet and learn other people’s great idea. But when I think of the punishment I will give up.
    6. What more can a university do to help students understand the expectations of plagiarism?
The university could give lectures to teach students what plagiarism is and how to prevent it. Besides, it’s helpful to teach students when to cite, what to cite, and how to cite.

  20. 1. I think Amro was wrong because he cant copied a paragraph into his own paper, it was really a plagiarism
    2. No, i wasn't. I never hear this word before came to USA.
    3. I think punishment for plagiarism is definitely appropriate. This is the best way to prevent people take a plagiarism again.
    4. In fact, punishment for plagiarism in China is not the same serious as some other country because the cultural and education is different. It’s still not acceptable but we are allowed to copy a paragraph sometimes.
    5. Because you forget the homework which due tomorrow, you do not have enough time to finish it, you prefer to plagiarism. I have experience this pressure. I want to get a high point of that paper but i really realize is too late to finish them well, i decide to copy some sentence from others.
    6. I think to do a speech is a good choice to let us know about the seriousness of the plagiarism.

  21. 1. I think Amro was wrong. Even though he didn't know plagirism before, copying one's work didn't show respect to the author.

    2. No.I haven't heared that before. In my hometown, if you want someone's work, you just add qutation marks or author's name. References are not necessary.

    3. I think punishment for plagirism is a little strict. Plagirism just related to moral quality, if someone was dropped out by plagirism, it will ruin one's whole life.

    4. Punishment for plagirism in China is not so strict. Nowadays, chinese educators become increasely focus on this topic. And they are more strict about punishment of plagirism.

    5. You want finish that task that due at midnight or you want your paper be perfect. I have experienced that pressures. I am not a native speaker, if I want wite papers in English, it will be diffcult.

    6. I think every professors can give a handout to list rules about their thoughts on plagirism. University also can have a lecture for international students.

  22. 1. I think he is wrong. Because even though it's just a short paragraph, he still plagiarize. The original sentences are written by the author and he or she deserves the credit. Plagiarism is definitely wrong.
    2. I didn't know the word "plagiarism" before coming to USA. In China, it's not so strict about copyright. Only when the events matter a lot to the society, it will be treat seriously.
    3. I think it should be suitable, because copy others work harm the credit of the author and may let the person who plagiarized have no progress in writing or related skills.
    4. We do have rules for copyright but it actually is not so strict. Seldom is people get punishments for plagiarism.
    5. Maybe the student cannot finish the paper on time or maybe he/she doesn't want to write the paper. Yes, I have experience the situation when I want to write the paper well or I do not have enough time.
    6. Maybe held a lecture for us international students.

  23. 1.Though Amro didn’t know the standards of U.S. colleges about plagiarism, he was totally wrong. He copied someone’s work without citation.

2.“Plagiarism” is a new word for me before coming to the U.S. In China people are required to respect copyright, however, people do not attach importance to copyright as American people.

3.I think the punishments for plagiarism is necessary but not too strict. Students should know the importance of copyright and respect it. If someone plagiarizes, she/he should receive proper punishments.

4.For university students when they copy or paraphrase others’ work, they aren’t used to citing. However if students work for formal essays, they are asked to cite. As for punishments, I’m not so clear about that.

5.When students work on homework, they may have no idea about the topic. They go online to find inspiration or resources. When they find what he/she wants or more academic results , they may plagiarize. Or sometimes it’s just because of laziness. It takes much time if you just work by yourself. Or they have no time to finish, they do homework perfunctorily.
I think everyone experienced the pressures especially high school students in China. Students always have much and difficult homework to do, so sometimes they will copy others’ homework. It depends on different students.

6.For American students, professors should confirm claim and punishments about plagiarism in the first class because students leaned it since they were little kids. For international students, professors should talk about it more detailed and patiently at the same time emphasize punishments.

  25. 1. Of course, he was wrong, because his paper still wasn't finished when it was half an hour before deadline, and he copied others' work without citation.

    2. Yes, I learned about it when I was in Senior High School. My teacher told us that when we wrote a dissertation in the future, plagiarism was prohibited, and there was a machine to examine whether the content of our dissertation is the same as some online materials.

3.Personally, I think the punishments for plagiarism are suitable. Intellectual property is a right that every citizen possesses. If other people infringed it, they should be punished severely.

    4. Actually, plagiarism is not regarded in China's education system as seriously as in American education system. In order to make our essays more structured and beautiful, thus getting a high score, even we were educated to imitate other's excellent views in our essays before we went to college.

5.I think two contributors to plagiarism are the deadline is around the corner and students have no idea about how to finish their assignments. To be honest, I have experienced the pressures but I still stuck to finishing my assignment on my own even though I had to stay up late.

6.In my view, there are several measures a university could take to reduce plagiarism. Firstly, at the beginning of every class, professors could introduce the rules of plagiarism, along with its importance and consequences. Secondly, an examination about academic honesty and plagiarism could be organised that all the students are required to attend. Finally, the behaviors of plagiarism students have and the punishments they suffer could be posted in the university website, but it had better to remove their names.

  26. 1. Amro was wrong because he used other's ideas in his assignment without any citation.
    2. "Plagiarism" is a new word for me, I have never heard of this word before coming to America. But I did know the word "cheating" and I know that intellectual property is an important and serious issue in American academic system.
    3. I think it depends. For international students, when they first come to American universities, most of them don't know so much about "plagiarism" or don't take this issue seriously, as a result, if it is the first time that the student plagiarizes, the punishment shouldn't be so strict. But international students should be careful once they have already known about the plagiarism. What's more, as for domestic students, they have already know the plagiarism and know the consequence of plagiarizing, so the punishments are appropriate.
    4. In my country's education system, plagiarism is not allowed as well, but most of the Chinese students don't care so much about that, just as what the author said in "For Some International Students, 'Plagiarism' is a Foreign Word," we consider it as share rather than plagiarism.
    5. As far as I am considered, there are two main reasons that compel a student to plagiarize. First, the student isn't familiar with the field that the assignment refers to, so that he/she has to look for other's ideas. Second, the time is limited and maybe he/she doesn't have enough time to finish the assignment. I have experienced the pressures.
    6. First, the universities can hold speeches or open classes about plagiarism for international students and domestic students. Next, the university can sponsor some "anti-plagiarism" organizations.
